Does Vastu really work? What evidence exists

One study of 5 homes, with no comparison group, is all the measured evidence we found. No source we opened shows Vastu changing health, wealth or relationships. The parts that overlap with sun, daylight and airflow work for physical reasons, under any name. The rest is tradition, which a family can choose to follow.

So, does Vastu really work? At Vastu16 we run a Vastu check, so we have a reason to say yes. We would rather show you what we found, what we did not find, and how we handle the gap.

Does Vastu really work? What would count, and what was tested

A claim that a room's direction changes a family's fortunes is testable. You would compare similar homes with and without a given placement, over time, and measure outcomes. The astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar offered a checklist for telling science from pseudoscience, and in the same note he called contemporary Vastu a collection of unproven claims linking fortunes to room placement [1]. His note is expert opinion, not a test.

The only measured study we found is Karani's 2019 paper [2]. She placed temperature and humidity loggers in the four corners of 5 Dubai villas for 14 days in summer and 14 in winter. She reports the north-east as the coolest corner and the south-east as the warmest as the overall trend, though she notes that in one house the north-west was the coolest side. Residents in the cooler rooms felt comfortable; those in the south-east and south-west rooms relied on air-conditioning. Karani explained the pattern through features Vastu shares with passive design, such as orientation, north windows and shading, and concluded that the homes were comfortable for their users. There was no comparison group and no statistical test.

Where Vastu overlaps with building science

Several common rules match what Indian building codes say for their own reasons. The Eco-Niwas Samhita 2024 gives orientation factors for sun on walls, at latitudes under 23.5 degrees N: north 0.659, north-east 0.906, south-west 1.124 and west 1.156 (Table 49) [3]. A lighter, open north-east and a closed south-west match that pattern in a hot climate. The same table rates east walls (1.155) almost exactly as high as west, and south-east (1.125) as high as south-west, so the overlap is with the north-east and south-west pair, not with every Vastu rule.

The National Building Code 2016 says the best orientation takes the most sun in winter and the least in summer (Part 8, cl. 3.4.1) [4]. It also sets minimum openable window areas, such as one-eighth of the floor area in composite climates (Part 3, cl. 20.1.2) [5], and the ventilation code of practice says windows placed diagonally opposite each other perform better than other arrangements for most orientations (IS 3362, cl. 6.7) [6].

The overlap is real but partial. A rule about where a toilet sits has no clear physical basis, and the texts were not written as climate studies.

Claims with no evidence

Effects on luck, health, money or marriage. No source we opened measures one. We do not make these claims, and we do not repeat them.

Magnetic fields and "geopathic zones". Fazeli and Goodarzi's 2010 review argues an environmental logic for Vastu, but it cites popular books, measures nothing, and itself notes that geo-biology often falls under pseudoscience [7].

Great age. Vastu as a written tradition is about 1,500 years old. The Brihat Samhita dates to the 6th century CE [8], the Mayamata to between the 9th and 12th centuries [9], and the term vastupurusamandala does not appear in early Vedic literature [10].

One agreed rulebook. The texts disagree with each other. The Brihat Samhita (53.118) puts the kitchen in the south-east [11], while the Manasara (XXXVI.26) puts it in the north or north-east [12]. Modern schools differ too; our guide to the 16-zone and 8-direction schools shows where.

Why people still use it: family, resale, peace of mind

Belief in Vastu is common, and surveys show it, with limits. In Chawla's survey of 200 Udaipur households in 2014, published in 2020, 91.5% had heard of Vastu, 29% reported full faith and 82% said they applied it when building [13]. In NoBroker's 2020 report, nearly 67% of homeseekers called Vastu compliance important, a figure from the Mumbai paragraph of a 17,652-person, six-metro survey [14]. A 2015 Housing.com figure of 93% came from 328 respondents in eight cities, a sample the report says included brokers, architects and builders [15].

Those numbers explain why a seller's plan gets asked about. Family is the other reason: a parent who cares about Vastu sleeps easier knowing the plan was checked. A choice made for those reasons is reasonable. It needs honesty, not proof.

How Vastu16 handles this: method published, no products

We publish every rule, zone and severity on our methodology page, and the same plan always gets the same result [16]. We name the school behind every reading and show both schools side by side. The rule set is a draft pending consultant review.

We do not sell remedy products, we do not use astrology, and our remedies start with steps that cost nothing. Short answers to common questions, drawn straight from the rule table, are on our Vastu FAQ.

Checklist

Sort any Vastu advice into three buckets

Use this sheet when a relative, a broker or a website gives you Vastu advice.

Bucket Example What to do
Physical Open the north windows for light and air; shade west glass Act on it. It has a source in building codes
Traditional Kitchen in the south-east; toilet out of the north-east Decide as a family. Ask which text or school it comes from
Unsupported A pyramid fixes a toilet; a room direction is said to change health or luck Skip it. No evidence, and often a sales pitch
  1. Ask: is this about light, heat, air, water or safety? If yes, it is physical.
  2. Ask: which text or school says this? If there is an answer, it is traditional.
  3. If it promises an outcome or needs a purchase, treat it as unsupported.

What is tradition and what is fact

Tradition

  • Kitchen in the south-east: Brihat Samhita 53.118 [11]. Kitchens in the north or north-east: Manasara XXXVI.26 [12].
  • Zone ratings and severities: Vastu16's rule table, a draft pending consultant review [16].

Physical fact

  • North walls gain the least heat and west walls the most, at latitudes under 23.5 degrees N: Eco-Niwas Samhita 2024, Table 49 [3].
  • Best orientation takes the most winter sun: NBC 2016 Part 8, cl. 3.4.1 [4].
  • North-east corners ran coolest overall in 5 Dubai homes: Karani 2019, no control group [2].
  • Text dates: Kim 2014 [8]; Dagens 1994 [9]; Raddock 2011 [10].

Where Vastu16 fits

If your family wants a Vastu reading, our free tool lets you read your plan under both schools, with every rule shown. You upload a floor plan, confirm the rooms and verify North, and it shows each room's zone and both readings. It does not predict outcomes, and it does not claim Vastu is proven.

Questions people ask

Does Vastu really work?

We found no study showing that Vastu changes health, wealth or relationships. The only measured study we found covers 5 homes in Dubai with no comparison group. The parts of Vastu that overlap with sun, daylight and airflow do work, for physical reasons that building codes also describe. The rest is tradition, and a family can choose to follow it.

Is there any science behind Vastu?

Some rules line up with building science. Keeping the north-east open and the south-west closed suits a hot climate, because south-west and west walls take more sun heat than north and north-east ones. That overlap is real. The claims that rooms change luck, health or money have not been tested in any study we could find.

What happens if Vastu is not followed?

Nothing that any study we opened can measure. No source we found shows a health, money or relationship effect from a room's direction. What a home does need is daylight, ventilation, dry walls and safe gas fittings, and those apply whatever you decide about Vastu.

Why do people follow Vastu if it is not proven?

For family, culture and resale. In a 2014 Udaipur survey of 200 households, 82% said they applied Vastu when building. Some buyers ask about it when they buy. Many families also value the calm of having checked. Those are real reasons, and none of them needs a proof of effect.
