Methodology

Every reading on this site comes from a fixed rule table. The same plan always gets the same result. This page shows all of it.

These rules are a draft rule set, pending review by our consultants. Treat them as a guide, not a verdict.

Rule set version: 0.1.0-draft.

The schools

SchoolHow it divides the homeZones, clockwise from North
16-zone16 zones of 22.5° each, plus the centreN, NNE, NE, ENE, E, ESE, SE, SSE, S, SSW, SW, WSW, W, WNW, NW, NNW
Traditional 8-direction8 zones of 45° each, plus the centreN, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW

More schools will be added as our consultants contribute rule sets. Each is applied separately and named on the result.

How a room gets its zone

  1. We take the outline of the home and find its centre.
  2. The middle cell of a 3 by 3 grid over the outline is the centre zone (Brahmasthan).
  3. Every other point is measured by its compass bearing from the centre, using verified North. The first zone is centred on North.
  4. A room takes the zone that holds the largest share of its area. The main door is a single point.
  5. If a room lies within 5° of a zone line, the result says so, because a small error in North would change it.

How North is verified

ConfidenceWhen
HighThe satellite map match and the phone compass agree within 8°.
MediumOne of the two is done, or they differ by 8° to 15°.
LowNorth comes only from the arrow on the plan or from the dial, or the two checks differ by more than 15°.

Compass readings more than 10° apart are rejected. The phone compass gives magnetic North.

How the score is calculated

Each school starts at 100. Every "avoid" reading subtracts 4 points for each point of its severity (1 to 5), and the score cannot go below 0. "Good" and neutral readings do not change the score. The combined score is the weighted average of the schools. Weights today: 16-zone 1, Traditional 8-direction 1.
