Does Vastu work in the USA? Homes, North and layouts
About 12.5 degrees: that is how far a compass in New York points from true north, and it is the main thing that changes for a US home [2]. The rules of Vastu travel with the plan. Whether they work anywhere is a belief question that no study we opened has settled [9][10].
Does Vastu work in the USA? The short answer
Does Vastu work in the USA in the same way it does in India? As a method, yes. Vastu reads where rooms sit around the centre of a home, by compass direction. That reading can be done on a house in New Jersey as easily as on a flat in Pune. Vastu16's rule table, for example, does not change with the country [1].
As an outcome, the honest answer is that nobody has measured it. The only measured study in our source library is a 2019 paper on 5 homes in Dubai with no comparison group [10]. The astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar called contemporary Vastu a collection of unproven claims [9]. So if your parents ask whether Vastu applies here, you can say the rules can be applied, and that applying them well needs three adjustments: a corrected North, careful reading of American rooms, and a plain answer about the parts the texts never covered.
What the texts assumed: Indian latitudes
The classical texts were written in India. The Mayamata was composed in South India between the 9th and 12th centuries [6]. The Manasara is also a South Indian text [6], and the Brihat Samhita dates from the 6th century [8].
None of them used a magnetic compass. The Mayamata (ch. 6) and the Manasara (ch. VI) set up a pole in the middle of a circle and join the two points where its shadow touches the circle, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. That line runs true east and west, not magnetic [6][7]. Correcting a compass to true north is therefore closer to the texts' own method, not a departure from it.
The texts also assumed Indian sunlight. The National Building Code's solar table for latitudes 9 to 29 degrees north shows a south wall receiving far more sun in winter than in summer [5]. The sun's angles in a US city differ from those in Mumbai or Delhi. We have not opened a US solar table, so this post makes no claim about how large the difference is. What carries over is the direction logic of the northern hemisphere, which is the hemisphere the texts were written in.
Magnetic declination in US cities
A compass points to magnetic north. The angle between that and true north is called magnetic declination [4]. In Mumbai it is close to zero. Across the USA it ranges widely, and Vastu16's table records these values from NOAA's World Magnetic Model 2025, checked on 2 October 2026 [2].
| City | Declination | What a compass does |
|---|---|---|
| New York | 12.5° west | Points 12.5° west of true north |
| Boston | 13.9° west | Points 13.9° west of true north |
| Chicago | 4.2° west | Points 4.2° west of true north |
| Houston | 1.7° east | Close to true north |
| Dallas | 2.5° east | Close to true north |
| San Francisco | 12.8° east | Points 12.8° east of true north |
| Seattle | 14.9° east | Points 14.9° east of true north |
Under the 16-zone school each zone is 22.5 degrees wide [1]. An uncorrected 13 degree error can move a room more than half a zone. NOAA also notes that local declination anomalies of 3 or 4 degrees, caused by the ground itself, are not uncommon [3]. Our guide on finding North for a Vastu reading covers the satellite method, and the related post on magnetic north versus true north explains the difference in more detail.
US layouts: open kitchens, basements, garages
American homes have rooms that the texts never described. Vastu16's check does not score garages, basements, laundries or mudrooms. What follows is how we treat them, not a rule from our table.
- Open kitchen. The kitchen rules are about the cooking fire, so tag the range or hob area as the kitchen, not the whole open space.
- Powder rooms and several bathrooms. Each toilet is read in its own zone.
- Basement. Read it as its own floor, with the same North, measured from its own centre.
- Attached garage. Leave it out of the main outline unless it is lived in. It changes the shape of the outline, and so the centre, if you include it.
How the page for US homes handles these is set out on our Vastu for homes in the USA page. For west facing homes in particular, see the post on west facing houses in the USA.
Southern-hemisphere and high-latitude questions
Families in Australia, New Zealand or South Africa ask a harder question. South of the equator the midday sun sits in the northern sky. Australia's government housing guide says north-facing walls there receive more sun in winter than in summer, the reverse of India [12].
The classical texts in our library say nothing about this, because they were written for Indian sites [6][7][8]. We have not opened a practitioner source on whether to flip the rules, so we do not report one. Vastu16 applies the same rule table everywhere and does not flip it for the southern hemisphere. If your family follows a consultant who flips the rules, the readings will differ from ours, and both should say so.
High latitudes raise a compass problem rather than a rule problem. NOAA warns that compasses become unreliable near the magnetic poles, where the horizontal field is weak [3], and the north magnetic pole moves about 55 km a year to the north-northwest [11].
How to check a US home
The steps are the same as for a flat in India, with one extra correction. Start from a floor plan of the main level, set North from the satellite view, and tag the rooms. If you use a phone compass, remember that the reading is magnetic. Android computes declination from the World Magnetic Model, but a given app may or may not apply it [13]. Our Vastu compass page explains how our own reading works.
Run both schools and read where they agree first. Where they split, the disagreement is in the tradition, not in your house.
Checklist
US home check: do this in 15 minutes
- Get the floor plan for the main level. A listing PDF or a builder's plan works.
- Open the address on a satellite map and line up the house outline. This gives true north.
- If you also take a phone compass reading, add or subtract your city's declination from the table.
- Outline the main floor only. Leave out the garage unless it is a lived-in room.
- Tag the main door, kitchen (the cooking area), each bedroom, each toilet and the stairs.
- Upload the basement, if any, as its own plan with the same North.
- Run both schools. Note where they agree and where they split.
- List anything the check does not score (garage, laundry, basement use) and treat it as a question for a consultant.
What is tradition and what is fact
Tradition
- The texts orient a building by the sun's shadow, not a compass: Mayamata ch. 6, Manasara ch. VI [6][7].
- Room and door placements come from Indian texts, mainly South Indian [6][7].
- Zone readings and severities on this page come from Vastu16's rule table, a draft under consultant review [1].
Physical fact
- Across the seven US cities in the table, declination ranges from 14.9° east to 13.9° west (NOAA WMM2025) [2].
- Local declination anomalies of 3 or 4 degrees are not uncommon (NOAA) [3].
- In the southern hemisphere, north walls receive more winter sun (Your Home, Australian Government) [12].
- No opened source shows a measured benefit of Vastu [9][10].
Where Vastu16 fits
Vastu16 lets you check your floor plan under both schools from anywhere. You upload the plan, confirm the rooms, and set North on the satellite map, which uses true north. It reads every room under the 16-zone and 8-direction schools and shows where they agree. It does not score garages, basements or laundries, it does not flip rules for the southern hemisphere, and it does not use birth details or sell remedies. If you are also looking at a flat back home, the post on buying a flat in India as an NRI covers that check.
Questions people ask
Does Vastu work outside India?
The rules can be applied anywhere, because they are read from the plan and the compass. Whether they produce any effect is a separate question. No source we opened shows a measured benefit of Vastu in India or abroad. What changes outside India is the practical work: correcting North and deciding how to read rooms the texts never described.
Do I need to correct my compass in the US?
Yes, wherever declination is large. A compass points to magnetic north, and NOAA's model puts it about 12.5 degrees west of true north in New York and 14.9 degrees east in Seattle. A 16-zone reading uses zones 22.5 degrees wide, so an uncorrected reading can move a room into the next zone.
Does Vastu apply in the southern hemisphere?
The classical texts in our library do not address it. They were written in India and orient buildings by the sun there. South of the equator the midday sun sits in the northern sky, so the physical reasons people give for warm and cool corners reverse. Vastu16 applies the same rule table everywhere and does not flip it.
