Vastu for the staircase
Where should the staircase be as per Vastu?
The answer depends on the school. The traditional school divides the home into 8 directions of 45 degrees. The 16-zone school divides it into 16 zones of 22.5 degrees, so it is more specific and sometimes disagrees. Both readings are below.
These rules are a draft rule set, pending review by our consultants. Treat them as a guide, not a verdict.
Staircase: 16-zone school
| Zones | Reading | Why |
|---|---|---|
| S, SSW, SW, WSW, W | Good | Heavy structures sit well in the south and west zones. |
| NE, NNE, N | Avoid 4 of 5 | Stairs add weight to the north zones, which are kept light. |
| Centre | Avoid 4 of 5 | The centre of the home is kept open. |
Staircase: Traditional 8-direction school
| Zones | Reading | Why |
|---|---|---|
| S, SW, W | Good | Heavy structures such as stairs belong in the south and west. |
| NE | Avoid 4 of 5 | Stairs add weight to the north-east, which is kept light. |
| Centre | Avoid 4 of 5 | The centre of the home is kept open and light. |
How to read this for your home
Zones are measured from the centre of the home, with North verified. A zone the tables do not list is neutral for the staircase. In a flat you usually cannot move the staircase, so what matters is knowing which zone it is really in. A North arrow that is 15 degrees off can move it to the next zone.
