Kitchen sink and stove as per Vastu: layout inside

3 moves cover most of it: the hob towards the south-east corner of the kitchen, the sink as far from the hob as the counter allows, and the cook facing east where possible. That is the common Vastu for kitchen sink and stove placement, and it comes after the gas safety rules, never before them.

At Vastu16 our check scores which zone the kitchen sits in, under the 16-zone school and the traditional 8-direction school [1]. Which zone the kitchen itself should sit in is covered on our kitchen readings page. This post arranges the fixtures inside the kitchen you already have.

Vastu16's check does not score where the hob, sink or fridge sit inside the kitchen. What follows is practitioner guidance from our remedy library and common practice, not a scored rule.

Gas safety rules that come first

Safety rules have a source and a reason. Vastu guidance is tradition. When the two pull in different directions, follow the safety rule.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas leaflet for LPG users sets out the basics [2]. Keep the cylinder upright. Keep the stove on a platform higher than the cylinder, never with the cylinder in a pit or inside an enclosed compartment. Hang no curtains on windows near the stove, fit no shelves or cabinets over the hot plate, and avoid a direct draught across the flame. If you smell gas, open the doors and windows, shut the regulator, and do not light a flame or touch a switch.

The National Building Code 2016 does not permit kitchens running on LPG in basements (Part 4, cl. 4.7.9) [3]. Its cylinder clauses in Part 9 (cl. 11.3) are written for commercial and institutional premises, so for a household cylinder, follow the distributor's guidance [4].

Stove position: gas stove direction as per Vastu

Vastu16's remedy library gives two kitchen steps for the hob [1]. The free one is to stand facing east while cooking, where the counter allows. The low-cost one is to move the hob along the counter towards the south-east corner of the kitchen.

The south-east idea has a textual root, and a contested one. The Brihat Samhita (53.118) puts the kitchen in the south-east of a four-hall house [5], and the Vishwakarma Prakash (2.94 to 97) puts the cooking room in Agneya, the south-east [6]. The Manasara (XXXVI.26) instead puts kitchens in the north, north-east or Parjanya quarter [7]. The names Agneya and Ishanya are explained in our Vastu glossary.

We found no rule in the texts we opened on which way the cook faces. The east-facing step is practitioner guidance, and we label it that way.

Vastu for kitchen sink and stove: keeping fire and water apart

Practitioner guidance keeps the hob and the sink apart, and Vastu16's remedy library repeats it as a free step: keep them as far apart on the counter as the layout allows [1].

The idea draws on a corner scheme. Modern Vastu books link the north-east to water and the south-east to fire. The Mayamata's nine-square diagram (7.24) puts Water, Fire, Ether and Wind at the corners, starting with Water at the north-east [8]. Read clockwise, the order the Mayamata's ring of deities follows, that puts Fire at the south-east. Karani's 2019 paper uses the same corner scheme; when we checked it against the texts, we found no classical link from those corner elements to the use of a room [9]. So the "fire and water apart" rule is modern guidance, not a quotation.

There is a practical side. A sink next to the hob splashes water towards a flame and leaves no room to set a hot pan down. A strip of counter between them helps the cook whatever the school.

Fridge, microwave and chimney

Vastu16's check does not score fridge or microwave position. No text we opened mentions them, so we give no direction for them here. The physical rule is simple: keep the fridge away from the hob's heat and leave the ventilation gap its manual asks for.

The chimney or exhaust has a clearer basis. The national code of practice on natural ventilation calls for about six air changes an hour in a family kitchen (IS 3362:1977, cl. 4.3.2) and notes that combustion products from stoves can reach other rooms (cl. 3.3) [10]. WHO guidance lists effective kitchen range hoods among the ways to control indoor dampness [11], and its guidance on household fuel stresses adequate ventilation [12]. The NBC asks for 25 percent more openable window area in a kitchen than elsewhere (Part 3, cl. 20.1.2, Note 3) [13].

Straight, L and parallel counters: worked layouts

The same three moves apply to every counter shape. Put the hob as close to the kitchen's south-east corner as the counter allows, keep the sink away from it, and let the cook face east if the counter runs that way.

Counter Hob Sink Cook faces Note
Straight, along an east wall Southern end Northern end East The textbook case
Straight, along a south wall Eastern end Western end South Facing east is not possible; keep the gap
L-shaped On the arm nearest the south-east On the other arm East if that arm is on the east wall The corner keeps them apart
Parallel (galley) Counter on the east side Opposite counter East The aisle separates fire and water

If the kitchen sits in a zone the schools advise against, rearranging the counter does not change that reading. A kitchen in the north-east, for example, is rated avoid, 4 of 5, in the traditional 8-direction school, and in the 16-zone school's NNE and NE zones (its ENE zone has no kitchen rule); our page on a kitchen in the north-east gives both readings.

Checklist

Counter layout in 10 steps

Do the safety steps first, then the Vastu steps.

  1. Cylinder upright, outside any closed cabinet, never in a pit.
  2. Stove platform higher than the cylinder.
  3. No curtains near the stove and no shelf over the hot plate.
  4. A window or exhaust that works, with no direct draught over the flame.
  5. A clear strip of counter beside the hob for hot pans.
  6. Find North in the kitchen with a compass, a metre from the fridge.
  7. Mark the kitchen's south-east corner on a sketch of the counter.
  8. Place the hob as near that corner as the counter allows.
  9. Place the sink as far from the hob as the counter allows.
  10. If the counter allows, stand facing east at the hob.

What is tradition and what is fact

Tradition

  • Kitchen in the south-east: Brihat Samhita 53.118 [5]; Vishwakarma Prakash 2.94 to 97 [6]. Kitchens in the north or north-east: Manasara XXXVI.26 [7]. The texts disagree.
  • Water, Fire, Ether and Wind at the corners of the nine-square diagram, starting with Water at the north-east: Mayamata 7.24 [8].
  • Hob towards the south-east, sink apart, cook facing east: practitioner guidance in Vastu16's remedy library [1].

Physical fact

  • Cylinder upright, stove higher than it, no shelves over the hot plate: MoPNG LPG leaflet [2].
  • No LPG kitchens in basements: NBC 2016 Part 4, cl. 4.7.9 [3].
  • About six air changes an hour in a family kitchen: IS 3362:1977, cl. 4.3.2 [10].
  • Range hoods and openable kitchen windows help control damp: WHO 2009 [11].

Where Vastu16 fits

Our free tool lets you see which zone your kitchen falls in under both schools. You upload the floor plan, confirm the rooms and verify North, and it shows the kitchen's zone and both readings, with first steps when either school reads it as one to avoid. It does not score the hob, sink or fridge inside the kitchen. For every room's preferred zone in one table, see our page on Vastu for the whole home.

Questions people ask

Which direction should the gas stove face as per Vastu?

Common practitioner guidance, carried in Vastu16's remedy library, is to place the hob so the cook faces east, where the counter allows. The classical texts we opened do not give a rule for the cook's facing. Gas safety comes first: the stove sits on a platform higher than the cylinder, with no shelves over the hot plate.

Can we place the sink and stove together?

They can share a counter. Vastu16's remedy library advises keeping the stove and the sink as far apart as the layout allows. On an L-shaped counter, put them on different arms. On a parallel counter, put them on opposite sides. A work surface between them also helps you cook.

Where should the kitchen sink be as per Vastu?

Practitioner guidance, carried in Vastu16's remedy library, keeps the sink as far from the hob as the counter allows, with the hob towards the south-east. Vastu16's check does not score the sink's position inside the kitchen. The texts we opened give no sink rule, so treat this as guidance, not a scored reading.

Which way should I face while cooking?

Facing east while cooking is the most common guidance, and it is the free kitchen step in Vastu16's remedy library. If the counter does not allow it, do not rebuild the kitchen for it. A safe, ventilated hob with no curtains near it matters more than which wall it faces.
