Vastu for the kitchen
Which direction is best for the kitchen as per Vastu?
The answer depends on the school. The traditional school divides the home into 8 directions of 45 degrees. The 16-zone school divides it into 16 zones of 22.5 degrees, so it is more specific and sometimes disagrees. Both readings are below.
These rules are a draft rule set, pending review by our consultants. Treat them as a guide, not a verdict.
Kitchen: 16-zone school
| Zones | Reading | Why |
|---|---|---|
| SE, SSE, S, W, NW | Good | Fire sits well in these zones. |
| N, NNE, NE | Avoid 4 of 5 | Fire in the north zones is read as burning opportunity, health and clarity. |
| Centre | Avoid 4 of 5 | The centre of the home is kept open. |
| SW | Avoid 3 of 5 | Fire in the south-west zone is read as strain on relationships. |
Kitchen: Traditional 8-direction school
| Zones | Reading | Why |
|---|---|---|
| SE, NW | Good | South-east is the fire corner; north-west is the accepted alternative. |
| NE | Avoid 4 of 5 | Fire in the north-east, the water and prayer corner, is a classic defect. |
| Centre | Avoid 4 of 5 | The centre of the home is kept open and light. |
| SW, N | Avoid 3 of 5 | Kitchens in the south-west or north are traditionally avoided. |
How to read this for your home
Zones are measured from the centre of the home, with North verified. A zone the tables do not list is neutral for the kitchen. In a flat you usually cannot move the kitchen, so what matters is knowing which zone it is really in. A North arrow that is 15 degrees off can move it to the next zone.
