Kitchen in the south-west: Vastu reading and remedies
Severity 3 of 5 in both schools: a kitchen in the south-west zone is one to avoid, not one to panic about [1]. The useful Vastu remedies for a south-west kitchen cost nothing or very little. Moving the room itself is a renovation decision, best taken only when other work is planned.
The short answer
A south-west kitchen is a middle-ranked reading. In Vastu16's rule table both the 16-zone school and the traditional 8-direction school rate it avoid, severity 3 of 5 [1]. For comparison, the same table rates a north-east kitchen at severity 4 in both schools. That case has its own page on the north-east kitchen.
Which zone suits a kitchen in general is covered on our kitchen page. This post deals with the case you already have: the kitchen is in the south-west, and you want to know how much it matters and what to change. The short version is to confirm the zone, apply the free steps inside the kitchen, and leave structural changes for a renovation. Nothing here requires buying an object.
How each school reads a south-west kitchen
The two schools draw the south-west differently. The 8-direction school uses one 45 degree sector. The 16-zone school splits the same area into three narrow zones of 22.5 degrees each, and only the middle one carries the avoid rule [1].
| Part of the south-west | 16-zone school | 8-direction school |
|---|---|---|
| South-south-west (SSW) | Neutral, no rule | Avoid, 3 of 5 (whole sector) |
| South-west (SW) | Avoid, 3 of 5 | Avoid, 3 of 5 |
| West-south-west (WSW) | Neutral, no rule | Avoid, 3 of 5 (whole sector) |
So a kitchen that sits near the edge of the south-west may be neutral under one school and avoid under the other. Our guide to 16-zone and 8-direction Vastu explains how the zones are drawn.
The classical texts also disagree on where a kitchen belongs. The Brihat Samhita (53.118) and the Vishwakarma Prakash (2.94-97) put it in the south-east [5][4]. The Manasara (XXXVI.26) puts kitchens in the north, north-east or Parjanya quarter [3]. The Mayamata puts the granary, not a kitchen, on the south-east square [2]. In the Brihat Samhita's four-hall house the south-west holds the store-room [5].
Free and low-cost remedies for a south-west kitchen
The remedies in Vastu16's table for any kitchen in an avoid zone come in a fixed order: free first, then low cost [1].
Free. Keep the stove and the sink as far apart on the counter as the layout allows. Where the counter allows, stand facing east while cooking. The related post on sink and stove placement covers the counter in detail.
Low cost. Move the hob along the counter towards the south-east corner of the kitchen itself. Every room has its own south-east part, and this step in Vastu16's remedy list uses the kitchen's own corner, not the home's [1]. A gas hob move needs a qualified fitter. The government's LPG safety leaflet asks for the stove on a platform higher than the cylinder, no curtains near it and no shelves over the hot plate [11].
Two physical points are worth checking while you are at it. A south-west kitchen with a west or south-west window can run hot in the afternoon: India's residential energy code weights south-west and west walls much higher than north ones for heat gain [8]. A kitchen also needs fresh air, about six air changes an hour for a family of five under IS 3362 [9].
Renovation-stage options
If walls are coming down anyway, Vastu16's table lists one bigger step: at plan or renovation stage, swap the kitchen with a room that sits in a zone suited to fire [1]. Under the 16-zone school those zones are SE, SSE, S, W and NW. Under the 8-direction school they are SE and NW.
A swap moves plumbing, gas lines and an exhaust. In a flat, ask the society before any work that touches shared pipes. Price it fully before deciding, and only do it if the family values the reading enough to pay for it.
A kitchen also has building-code minimums. The National Building Code's model rules ask for a kitchen of at least 5 square metres (4.5 with a separate store) and a window or ventilator, with 25 percent more opening area than an ordinary room [7]. Any new position has to meet these. For changes that avoid demolition entirely, see the post on Vastu remedies without demolition.
Buying a flat with a south-west kitchen
A severity 3 kitchen is one line in a whole report. On a site visit, look at the full plan under both schools before letting one room decide. Our list of common Vastu defects shows how other rooms are rated.
If the flat is under construction, ask early whether the hob wall or the sink can change. Under section 14 of the RERA Act, the builder may make minor changes a buyer asks for, but the Act's definition of minor changes excludes structural work such as cutting into a wall, and changes to fixtures. So moving a kitchen is not a buyer's right; it depends on the builder and on the sanctioned plan [12]. Get any agreed change in writing. This is general information, not legal advice. Check your state's RERA rules or ask a lawyer.
Weigh the kitchen against what you can measure: daylight, cross-ventilation, afternoon heat and price. The IIT Bombay energy handbook found that in warm Indian climates, glass facing south-west gave the highest cooling load in its models [10].
Checklist
Steps for a south-west kitchen
- Find the centre of the home on the plan and confirm the kitchen sits in the south-west, not a neighbouring zone.
- Check each school separately: under the 16-zone school only the middle SW zone is avoid.
- Pull the sink and the stove apart on the counter, as far as it allows.
- If the counter allows, set up to face east while cooking.
- Ask a gas fitter whether the hob can move towards the south-east corner of the kitchen.
- Check the window: shade a west or south-west window, and make sure the exhaust works.
- Leave any kitchen swap for a planned renovation, priced in full.
What is tradition and what is fact
Tradition
- South-east kitchen: Brihat Samhita 53.118 and Vishwakarma Prakash 2.94-97 [5][4].
- North or north-east kitchen: Manasara XXXVI.26 [3].
- South-west store-room in a four-hall house: Brihat Samhita 53.118 [5].
- Severity 3 of 5 in both schools: Vastu16's draft rule table [1].
Physical fact
- Kitchen ventilation: about six air changes per hour (IS 3362, cl. 4.3.2) [9].
- Kitchen minimum 5 sq m with an opening, plus 25 percent more opening area (NBC 2016 Part 3, cl. 12.3 and 20.1.2) [7].
- South-west and west walls carry high heat-gain weights (Eco-Niwas Samhita 2024, Table 49, latitudes under 23.5 degrees north) [8].
- No source we opened measures an effect of kitchen direction on a household; Narlikar (2003) calls Vastu's claims unproven [6].
Where Vastu16 fits
Vastu16 lets you check where your kitchen falls under both schools. You upload the plan, confirm the rooms and North, and the report shows the kitchen's zone, its rating in each school and the free and low-cost steps first. It does not inspect gas lines, measure heat or approve renovations, and it never recommends a product.
Questions people ask
Is a south-west kitchen bad as per Vastu?
Both schools in Vastu16's table read a kitchen in the south-west zone as one to avoid, at severity 3 of 5. That is a middle reading, one step less severe than a north-east kitchen at 4. In the 16-zone school the zones either side of the south-west are neutral, so the exact position matters. No source shows a measured effect on a household.
What are the remedies for a kitchen in the south-west?
Start free: keep the stove and the sink as far apart as the counter allows, and face east while cooking where you can. The low-cost step is to move the hob along the counter towards the south-east corner of the kitchen. Swapping the kitchen with another room belongs at plan or renovation stage. No product is needed.
Should I avoid buying a flat with a south-west kitchen?
Not on this point alone. A severity 3 reading is one item in a whole plan, and the main door, toilets and bedrooms carry their own readings, some of them higher. Check the full plan under both schools, ask whether the hob position can change, and weigh light, ventilation and price as you would for any flat.
