Vastu pyramids, yantras and crystals: do they work?

None of the five classical texts we read prescribes a pyramid, a crystal or a metal strip as a cure for a layout, and no study we found measures whether a Vastu pyramid or a yantra changes anything [2][3][4][5][6]. Products are sold widely today. The free and low-cost steps for the same defects are listed further down this page.

The short answer

If a consultant has suggested buying pyramids and a yantra, you are right to ask first. Here is what we found when we checked.

The classical texts describe planning and building rites, not purchased objects [2][3][4][5][6]. The only measured study of Vastu homes in our library looked at temperatures in 5 Dubai houses and did not test any product [8]. The astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar described contemporary Vastu as a collection of unproven claims [7]. Products, meanwhile, are easy to find for sale [12][13].

So the evidence we could find does not show that a Vastu pyramid works, and it does not show that one fails. It has simply not been tested in anything we could open. That is a weak basis for spending money, especially when free steps exist for the same defect.

What the classical texts prescribe

The texts in our library deal with how to choose, lay out and build a home.

  • Site. The Mayamata describes a rite of taking possession of a site, followed by ploughing, sowing, grazing cows on it and a pit test with water (ch. 4) [2]. The Samarangana Sutradhara describes land tests by smell, colour, taste and sound, and a ritual before digging (ch. 8) [4].
  • Grid and centre. The Mayamata, Manasara and Brihat Samhita lay out the 64 or 81 square grid with Brahma at the centre, to be protected [2][3][5].
  • Doors. The texts name the door squares on each side and the faults of a badly placed door [14][3][5][6].
  • Rooms. The Brihat Samhita (53.118) and the Vishwakarma Prakash (2.94-97) place rooms by direction [5][6].
  • Rites. The Mayamata describes a foundation deposit during construction (ch. 27) [14].

In these texts the remedy for a poor layout is a better layout: choose another site, move the door to a better square, keep the centre clear. None of these five texts, in the chapters we read, offers a pyramid, a crystal or a metal strip as a remedy for a layout. The Manasara does place gems, including crystal, and metals in a pit during a building rite (ch. XVIII), which is a construction ceremony, not a cure [3].

Where remedy products came from

We could not find a published history that dates when pyramids, crystals or strips entered Vastu practice, so we do not give one. What we can show is how they are offered today.

An online directory of Vastu consultants lists service categories such as Vastu products, crystals, pyramids and yantras, alongside astrology and numerology [12]. A remedy store sells metal strips for toilets and entrances, described as working without demolition [13]. A property portal's article on lifts suggests a pyramid on top of the lift and crystals or mirrors near it [11].

Practitioners are not united on this. One Mumbai consultant's fee page complains about astrologers and others who have moved into Vastu and charge large sums for remedies, yantras and havans, and states that he does not trade in products [10]. Vastu16 does not sell or recommend any product. Our methodology page lists every remedy we use.

What evidence exists on Vastu pyramids and yantras

Claim What we found Source
A pyramid or yantra corrects a defect No test of any product found Library-wide search [7][8]
Vastu homes differ physically 5 Dubai homes: north-east corner coolest, south-east warmest; no comparison group Karani 2019 [8]
Vastu has an environmental logic Argued from popular books, not measured; the paper itself notes geo-biology is often called pseudoscience Fazeli and Goodarzi 2010 [9]
Vastu claims are proven Called a collection of unproven claims Narlikar 2003 [7]

Karani suggested that the overlap with passive design, such as orientation, window placement and shading, could explain the comfort she found. She did not test any object [8]. That points in a useful direction. The physical parts of a home, light, air and heat, can be checked and changed without buying anything.

Questions to ask before you buy anything

If you are still considering a product, ask these questions and write down the answers.

  1. Which school? The 16-zone and 8-direction schools often read the same room differently.
  2. Which text, chapter and verse? A real rule can be traced. "It is in the shastras" is not a reference.
  3. What evidence? Ask for a study with a comparison group, not a testimonial.
  4. What does it cost in total? Include installation, repeat visits and replacements.
  5. What is the refund policy, in writing?
  6. Is there a free step for the same defect? If yes, try it first.

What we recommend instead

Vastu16's remedies come in a fixed order: free first, then low cost, then changes at plan or renovation stage [1]. Here are the first steps for the defects in our table. Our list of common Vastu defects has the full readings.

Defect Free step Low-cost step
Toilet in an avoid zone Keep the door closed and the lid down; keep it dry and ventilated Fit an exhaust fan; replace leaking fittings
Main door in an avoid zone Keep the entrance clean, bright and clear Add a bright light inside and outside the door
Kitchen in an avoid zone Keep stove and sink far apart; face east while cooking Move the hob towards the kitchen's south-east corner
Staircase in an avoid zone Keep the space under the stairs clear Light every flight well
Bedroom in an avoid zone Place the bed with the head to the south or east Use the room as a guest room or study

What is tradition and what is fact

Tradition

  • A foundation deposit during building: Mayamata ch. 27 [14].
  • Remedy order (free, low cost, renovation): Vastu16's draft table [1].

Physical fact

  • No opened source tests a Vastu product.
  • The only measured study of Vastu homes covered 5 houses, with no comparison group (Karani 2019) [8].
  • Products are sold online for toilets and entrances [13].

Where Vastu16 fits

Vastu16 lets you see each room's reading and its free first steps under both schools, from your floor plan. It shows the cheapest steps first and never recommends a pyramid, yantra, crystal, strip or ritual purchase. It does not prove that Vastu works, and it does not replace a consultant if your family wants one. Common questions are answered on our Vastu FAQ page.

Questions people ask

Do Vastu pyramids work?

We found no study that tests whether a Vastu pyramid changes anything in a home, and no classical text in our library prescribes one. The only measured study of Vastu homes we opened covered 5 houses with no comparison group and did not test products. So there is no evidence either way that we could cite, and no reason to pay for one before trying the free steps.

Are Vastu yantras mentioned in the texts?

The five classical texts in our source library describe sites, grids, doors, rooms and building rites. Our notes on them record no yantra sold as a cure for a layout defect. Yantras appear in some consultants' offers today, often listed next to astrology and numerology. If someone cites a text for a yantra, ask for the chapter and verse.

Do I need to buy products to fix Vastu?

No. Every remedy in Vastu16's table is free, low cost or a change made at plan or renovation stage: keeping a toilet door closed, moving a hob or a bed, lighting an entrance. None involves buying a remedy object such as a pyramid, yantra or strip. If a consultant insists on a product, ask which text and which evidence support it, and get the price and refund terms in writing.
