Vastu remedies without demolition: what you can change
27 of the 32 remedies in our library need no demolition, and none of them is a product. Most Vastu remedies without demolition are changes to cleaning, light, furniture, which way you face and how a room is used. They ease a reading without moving the room. Only a plan or renovation change moves a room into a new zone.
At Vastu16 we read every room under two schools, the 16-zone school and the traditional 8-direction school, and each finding to avoid carries a severity from 1 to 5 [1]. This post ranks the remedies across the whole home, cheapest first. To see which defects rank as the most serious, read our list of the most serious Vastu defects.
Vastu remedies without demolition: three bands
Every remedy in Vastu16's library sits in one of three bands [1]. We always list them in this order, and we suggest you work through them in this order too.
| Band | What it means | Count in our library | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | A change of habit, cleaning or arrangement | 16 | Turn the bed so the head points south or east |
| Low cost | An ordinary repair or a furniture move | 11 | Fit an exhaust fan in the toilet |
| Renovation stage | Only when the plan is still open or walls are coming down anyway | 5 | Move the WC into a zone the school rates well |
Nothing in the first two bands changes a room's zone, so a room's reading stays the same unless you change what the room is used for. The value is in the physical side: a clean, dry, bright and well-ventilated room is a better room under any school and none. Our sample report for a 2 BHK shows how findings and first steps appear together.
Entrance and kitchen: what can change without breaking walls
Entrance. The free steps are to keep the entrance clean, bright and clear of shoes, bins and stored items, and to make sure the door opens fully without sticking or creaking [1]. The low-cost steps are a bright light inside and outside the door, and a repair or repaint of a worn door and threshold. The renovation-stage step applies only while a home is being built: ask whether the door can shift along the same wall into the neighbouring zone.
Kitchen. Keep the stove and the sink as far apart on the counter as the layout allows, and where the counter allows, stand facing east while cooking [1]. The low-cost step is to move the hob along the counter towards the south-east corner of the kitchen. The texts disagree on where a kitchen belongs: the Brihat Samhita (53.118) puts it in the south-east, while the Manasara (XXXVI.26) puts kitchens in the north or north-east [2][3]. Which zone the kitchen itself should sit in is covered on our kitchen readings page.
Toilets and bedrooms
Toilets carry the highest severities in both schools. A toilet in the north-east is rated 5 of 5 in the traditional 8-direction school, and the 16-zone school rates the N, NNE and NE zones 5 of 5 [1]. The free steps are to keep the door closed and the lid down, and to keep the room dry, clean and ventilated, with leaks fixed. The low-cost steps are an exhaust fan and new fittings where old ones leak or stain. Our page on a toilet in the north-east gives both readings in full.
Those physical steps have their own basis. The National Building Code 2016 (Part 3, cl. 12.4.3) requires every bathroom or WC to have at least one wall open to external air and a window or ventilator of at least 0.3 sq m opening to a shaft or open space [4], and WHO guidance says persistent dampness and mould should be avoided [5].
Bedrooms. Place the bed so the head points south or east, keep stored clutter out from under the bed, and avoid a mirror facing the bed [1]. In a master bedroom, move the bed and heavy wardrobes towards the south-west part of the room. If a bedroom sits in a zone the school advises against, use it as a guest room or study.
Pooja space, study and stairs
Pooja space. Face east or north while praying, and keep the prayer space clean and away from a wall shared with a toilet [1]. If the home has no room in a suitable zone, a movable prayer unit in the north-east part of the living room is the low-cost option. Worship rooms in the north-east are attested in the texts: the Mayamata places the cult room on the north-east square, and the Manasara (XXXVI.30) names the Isa or Aditi quarter [6][3].
Study. Sit facing east or north while studying, and keep the desk and the wall in front of it clear [1]. If the study room falls in a zone the school advises against, move the desk to another room.
Stairs. Keep the space under the stairs clear of discarded items and light every flight well [1]. Moving a staircase is possible only at plan stage. Both schools rate stairs in the north-east, and at the centre, 4 of 5.
Checklist
Do this in 30 minutes
Use this list on a weekend, room by room. Every step is free or close to it.
- Entrance. Clear shoes, bins and boxes. Open the door fully. Note any creak or stick for repair.
- Entrance light. Check the bulbs inside and outside the door. Replace a dim one.
- Kitchen. Look at the gap between hob and sink. If a movable hob can shift towards the south-east corner, note it.
- Toilets. Close every toilet door and lid. Run the tap and flush to check for leaks. Check the exhaust fan works.
- Bedrooms. Note which way each bed head points. Turn any bed whose head points north, where the room allows.
- Under the bed. Clear stored clutter.
- Mirrors. Note any mirror that faces a bed.
- Prayer space. Check it does not share a wall with a toilet. Note which way you face.
- Desk. Turn the chair so you face east or north, if the room allows.
- Under the stairs. Clear discarded items. Check every flight is lit.
What no remedy changes
A remedy does not move a room. If a toilet sits in the north-east, a closed door and a fan make it a better toilet, but the 16-zone and 8-direction readings stay at 5 of 5 [1]. We say this plainly because the room's zone is what a consultant or a future buyer will read from the plan.
Plans matter at resale for some buyers. In NoBroker's 2020 report, nearly 67% of homeseekers called Vastu compliance an important factor, a figure that sits in the Mumbai paragraph of a survey of 17,652 people across six metros [7]. It is a self-selected platform survey, so treat it as a signal, not a measure.
Changing the plan itself is the renovation band. In a flat still under construction, moving a WC or a wall is at the builder's discretion and needs approval. RERA s.14 allows a buyer's minor alterations but excludes structural changes [8]. This is general information, not legal advice. Check your state's RERA rules or ask a lawyer.
Why we never sell remedy products
Vastu16 does not sell or recommend pyramids, yantras, metal strips, crystals or any ritual purchase. No source we opened shows a measured benefit from them, and the rule table we publish has no place for them [1]. A remedy that costs money should be an ordinary home repair you would make anyway.
What is tradition and what is fact
Tradition
- Kitchen in the south-east: Brihat Samhita 53.118 [2]. Kitchens in the north or north-east: Manasara XXXVI.26 [3]. The texts disagree.
- Worship room in the north-east: Mayamata ch. 26 [6]; Manasara XXXVI.30 [3].
- Zone ratings, severities and remedies: Vastu16's rule table, a draft pending consultant review [1].
Physical fact
- Every bathroom or WC needs an outside wall and a window or ventilator of at least 0.3 sq m: NBC 2016 Part 3, cl. 12.4.3 [4].
- Bathrooms and WCs need about six air changes an hour: IS 3362:1977, cl. 4.3.3 [9].
- Persistent damp and mould should be avoided: WHO 2009 [5].
- RERA s.14 excludes structural changes from a buyer's alterations: RERA Act 2016 [8].
Where Vastu16 fits
Our free tool lets you check your floor plan under both schools. You upload the plan, confirm the rooms and verify North, and the report lists each room's zone, the readings from both schools and the first two steps from the free and low-cost bands. It does not score plot shape, mirrors or fixtures, and it does not use astrology. For a full set of remedies tailored to your plan, you can ask a consultant to review your plan.
Questions people ask
Can Vastu defects be fixed without demolition?
Most can be eased without demolition. In Vastu16's remedy library, 27 of 32 steps need no civil work: cleaning, light, furniture placement, which way you face, and how a room is used. The room's zone does not change, so the reading stays the same. Only a plan or renovation change moves a room.
What are free Vastu remedies?
Free remedies are changes of habit and arrangement. Keep the entrance clear and the door opening fully. Keep the stove and sink apart. Turn the bed so the head points south or east. Keep the toilet door shut, dry and ventilated. Pray facing east or north. Clear the space under the stairs.
Do I need to buy anything to fix Vastu?
No. None of the remedies in Vastu16's library is a product. The low-cost ones are ordinary home repairs, such as a brighter light, an exhaust fan or a fixed tap. Vastu16 does not sell or recommend pyramids, yantras, metal strips or crystals, and no opened source shows they change anything.
