South facing main door remedies, without products
Severity 2 of 5, in one school, is the most a door in the S or SSE zone gets. For those doors, south facing main door vastu remedies come down to light, upkeep and a clear threshold. A door in the SSW zone is different: the 16-zone school rates it avoid, 4 of 5, and it deserves a closer look.
At Vastu16 we read the door by its exact zone, not by the word "south". Our general page on south facing house readings gives the verdict for each zone. This post is about what to do once you know it: first find the zone, then work through the remedies in order, free first. None of them is a product.
South facing main door Vastu remedies: the short answer
Most south doors need little. Under the 16-zone school, a door in the S or SSE zone is neutral: there is no rule against it. Under the traditional 8-direction school, a south or south-east entrance is rated avoid, 2 of 5, the mildest severity in the table [1].
The south door that matters is the one near the south-west. The 16-zone school rates a door in SSW or SW avoid, 4 of 5, and the 8-direction school rates a south-west entrance 4 of 5 as well [1]. Our page on a main door in the south-west covers that case in full.
The classical texts do not condemn south doors as a group. The Mayamata names the Raksasa square on the south among the auspicious door squares (30.44-47), and the Manasara names the Grihakshata quarter on the south for main doors (XXXVI.66-67) [2][3]. The Brihat Samhita gives a result for each of 32 door positions and names no single best side (53.71-75) [4].
Checklist
First check which south zone the door is in
Measure the bearing of the door's centre from the centre of the home, using verified North [1].
| Door bearing (true) | 16-zone | 8-direction | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 146.25° to 157.5° | SSE: neutral | SE: avoid, 2 of 5 | Free steps only |
| 157.5° to 168.75° | SSE: neutral | S: avoid, 2 of 5 | Free steps only |
| 168.75° to 191.25° | S: neutral | S: avoid, 2 of 5 | Free steps only |
| 191.25° to 202.5° | SSW: avoid, 4 of 5 | S: avoid, 2 of 5 | Free and low-cost steps |
| 202.5° to 213.75° | SSW: avoid, 4 of 5 | SW: avoid, 4 of 5 | All bands; read the south-west page |
A door a few degrees either side of 191.25 can swing from neutral to 4 of 5 under the 16-zone school. Verify North before you act on a reading near that line. Check the plan's arrow against a satellite map and a compass taken away from metal. Our page on main door readings by zone lists every entrance rule.
Free changes at the door
These come from Vastu16's remedy library for entrances [1]. They cost nothing, and they are good housekeeping under any school or none.
- Keep the entrance clean, bright and clear of shoes, bins and stored items.
- Make sure the door opens fully and does not stick or creak.
If a shoe rack, a bin or stored boxes sit at your door, clearing them is the most visible change you can make. Open the door to its full swing and check that nothing behind it stops it. If it drags on the floor or creaks, note it for the low-cost list.
The free steps do not change the door's zone, so a report reads the same afterwards. They change how the entrance is used and how it looks, which is the part you control. Our list of Vastu remedies without demolition gives the same bands for every room.
Low-cost changes
The next band costs a little and needs no civil work [1].
- Add a bright light outside and inside the door.
- Repair or repaint a worn door and threshold.
Light is a practical point on the south side in India. The National Building Code 2016 tables show that a south-facing wall receives far more sun in winter than in summer at Indian latitudes (Part 8, Section 1, Table 3) [5]. In summer the south door may sit in shade for much of the day, and a good light at the threshold helps.
A worn threshold, a sagging hinge or peeling paint are ordinary repairs. Do them because the door needs them. A repair is a remedy that is worth the money whether or not you follow Vastu.
Renovation-stage options
Only one remedy moves the door, and it works only while a home is being built or rebuilt. Ask whether the door can shift along the same wall into the neighbouring zone [1].
For a door in SSW, a shift east along the south wall into the S zone changes the 16-zone reading from avoid (4 of 5) to neutral. In a flat under construction, a door position is part of the sanctioned plan. RERA s.14 counts a change to a means of access as a structural change, outside the minor alterations a buyer can ask for, so the builder and the approving authority decide [7]. This is general information, not legal advice. Check your state's RERA rules or ask a lawyer. In an independent house at plan stage, it is a conversation with your architect.
Once a home is built, moving the main door is rarely worth the cost, the structural risk and the approvals. Use the free and low-cost bands instead. For the most serious door readings and how they compare with other rooms, see our list of Vastu defects by severity.
What we do not recommend: products
Pages that rank for this topic often suggest a product or a symbol for a south entrance. One interior-design guide we read suggests a "Vastu pyramid" for a south-facing door, and a swastika in kumkum where two doors face each other [6].
Vastu16 does not recommend any of these. They are not in the classical door passages we read in the Mayamata, the Manasara or the Brihat Samhita [2][3][4], and no source we opened shows that they change anything. They are also not in our rule table or remedy library [1].
If someone tells you a south door needs a purchase to be "corrected", ask which text the remedy comes from and what it is meant to change. A remedy that costs money should be an ordinary repair you would make anyway.
On your next walk to the door
- Find the door's bearing from the centre of the home, with North verified.
- Look it up in the zone table. Note both schools.
- S or SSE: do the two free steps and stop.
- SSW: do the free and the low-cost steps, then read the south-west page.
- Clear shoes, bins and boxes from the entrance.
- Open the door fully. Note any creak, stick or drag.
- Check the bulbs inside and outside the door.
- Skip every product.
What is tradition and what is fact
Tradition
- South door squares among the auspicious ones: Mayamata 30.44-47 [2]; Manasara XXXVI.66-67 [3].
- No single best door side; results vary by position: Brihat Samhita 53.71-75 [4].
- Zone ratings, severities and remedies: Vastu16's rule table, a draft pending consultant review [1].
- Pyramids for south doors: practitioner suggestion only [6]. Vastu16 does not recommend them.
Physical fact
- A south-facing wall receives much more solar radiation in winter than in summer at Indian latitudes: NBC 2016, Part 8, Table 3 [5].
- Sun-breakers are recommended outside the cold zone to cut direct sun and glare: NBC 2016, Part 8, cl. 3.4.1.1 [5].
- A change to a means of access is a structural change, outside a buyer's minor alterations: RERA Act 2016, s. 14 [7].
Where Vastu16 fits
Our free tool lets you check which zone your south door is in under both schools. You upload the plan, verify North on a satellite map, and the report gives the door's zone, both readings and the first two steps from the free and low-cost bands. It does not sell or suggest products, and it does not use astrology.
Questions people ask
What are the remedies for a south facing main door?
Start free. Keep the entrance clean, bright and clear of shoes and bins, and make sure the door opens fully without sticking. Next, add a bright light inside and outside and repair a worn door or threshold. Only at build or renovation stage, ask whether the door can shift along the wall into the neighbouring zone.
Is a south facing main door always a defect?
No. Under the 16-zone school, a door in the S or SSE zone is neutral. The traditional 8-direction school rates a south door avoid, 2 of 5, its mildest severity. Only a door in SSW draws 4 of 5 under the 16-zone school. The Mayamata and Manasara both list south door squares among the auspicious ones.
Do metal strips or pyramids fix a south door?
Vastu16 does not recommend them. They do not appear in the door passages of the Mayamata, Manasara or Brihat Samhita that we read, they are not in our rule table, and no source we opened shows they change anything. Spend the money on light and repairs, which improve the entrance whatever school you follow.
