Vastu for a 4 BHK flat: rooms, zones and who sleeps where

4 bedrooms give you a choice most flats do not: you can match rooms to zones. Vastu for a 4 BHK flat comes down to three moves. Put the master bedroom in the south-west, south or west, give the other bedrooms the west, north-west, east or south, and keep every toilet out of the north-east and the centre.

At Vastu16 we read each room under the 16-zone school and the traditional 8-direction school [1]. A smaller flat leaves little to decide; the 3 BHK readings show how few choices that size gives. A 4 BHK is where room assignment starts to matter.

The extra choices a 4 BHK gives

A 4 BHK usually adds a fourth bedroom, a third toilet and sometimes a study or a servant room. Those rooms are already built where they are. What you choose is who uses which room, and what each room is used for.

That choice is worth something because the rule table rates rooms by type. A room in the north-east is rated good for a study in both schools, but as a master bedroom it is rated avoid, 2 of 5 in the 16-zone school and 3 of 5 in the 8-direction school [1]. Using that room as a study instead of the master bedroom changes the reading without moving a wall.

The National Building Code 2016 sets the minimum sizes behind these rooms: a habitable room of at least 9.5 square metres, and a second room of at least 7.5 (Part 3, cl. 12.2.2) [2]. In a 4 BHK the smallest bedroom is often the one to turn into a study.

Vastu for 4BHK flat bedrooms: assigning by zone

Measure each bedroom's zone from the centre of the flat. A room takes the zone that holds most of its area [1].

Bedroom zone Master bedroom, 16-zone Master bedroom, 8-direction Other bedroom, 16-zone Other bedroom, 8-direction
SW Good Good Neutral Neutral
S Good Good Good Good
W, WSW Good Good (W) Good Good (W)
NW, NNW Neutral Neutral Good Good (NW)
E Neutral Neutral Good Good
NE Avoid, 2 of 5 Avoid, 3 of 5 Neutral Neutral
SE Neutral Avoid, 2 of 5 Neutral Neutral
ESE, SSW, WNW Avoid, 3 of 5 Falls in E/SE, S/SW or W/NW Avoid, 2 of 5 Falls in a neighbouring direction

The schools disagree on SSW and WNW. The 16-zone school rates a master bedroom in either avoid, 3 of 5, while in the 8-direction school SSW falls in S or SW, both rated good, and WNW falls in W (good) or NW (neutral). Our bedroom readings page shows every zone.

The texts say little about who sleeps where. The Manasara (XXXVI.37) names the Satyaka and Antariksha quarters for bedrooms [3], and in the Vishwakarma Prakash the editor restores a line placing sleeping rooms in the south, from other works (2.94 to 97) [4]. Vastu16's guidance adds one practical step for every bedroom: place the bed so the head points south or east [1].

Toilets: where three of them go

Three toilets fit the 16-zone school neatly, because it rates exactly three zones good for a toilet: SSW, WNW and ESE [1]. The 8-direction school rates NW and W good.

Toilet zone 16-zone school 8-direction school
NE, N, NNE Avoid, 5 of 5 (NE, N, NNE) NE avoid 5 of 5; N avoid 2 of 5
Centre Avoid, 5 of 5 Avoid, 5 of 5
SW Avoid, 4 of 5 Avoid, 4 of 5
SE Avoid, 4 of 5 Neutral
E, W, S Avoid, 2 of 5 E avoid 2 of 5; W good; S neutral
SSW, WNW, ESE Good Falls in a neighbouring direction

West is a clear disagreement: good for a toilet in the 8-direction school, avoid 2 of 5 in the 16-zone school. Check every toilet, including attached ones and the one in the servant room. Every bathroom or WC needs at least one wall open to external air and a window or ventilator of at least 0.3 sq m opening to a shaft or open space, and a WC must not open straight into the kitchen (NBC Part 3, cl. 12.4) [2]. Our toilet readings page has the full list.

Study, pooja and servant room

Study. The 16-zone school rates WSW, NE, E and W good, and ESE, SSW and WNW avoid, 2 of 5. The 8-direction school rates NE, E, N and W good [1]. The Vishwakarma Prakash places a study between the south-west and the west (2.94 to 97) [4].

Pooja. The 16-zone school rates NE, ENE, E and W good, and SSW, ESE and WNW avoid, 3 of 5. The 8-direction school rates NE, E and N good, and S and SW avoid, 3 of 5 [1]. If no room fits, a movable prayer unit in the north-east part of the living room is the low-cost option.

Servant room. Vastu16's table has no rule for a servant room, so the check does not score it. What follows is practical, not a rule: it usually sits near the kitchen or a service entrance, often with its own toilet, and that toilet is scored like any other.

Worked example: one 4 BHK, room by room

The layout here is illustrative, not a real flat. Bearings are measured from the centre with verified North; readings come from Vastu16's rule table [1].

Room Bearing 16-zone 8-direction
Main door 85 degrees (E) Good Good
Living 20 degrees (NNE / N) Good Good
Pooja unit in the living room 40 degrees (NE) Good Good
Study 50 degrees (NE) Good Good
Kitchen 140 degrees (SE) Good Good
Master bedroom 225 degrees (SW) Good Good
Bedroom 2 270 degrees (W) Good Good
Bedroom 3 320 degrees (NW) Good Good
Bedroom 4 110 degrees (ESE / E) Avoid, 2 of 5 Good
Toilet A, attached to master 200 degrees (SSW / S) Good Neutral
Toilet B 295 degrees (WNW / NW) Good Good
Toilet C 160 degrees (SSE / S) Neutral Neutral

Each school starts at 100 and loses 4 points per severity point of each avoid reading [1]. Here the 16-zone school scores 92 and the 8-direction school 100, so the combined score is 96. The one finding is bedroom 4. The parents take the master bedroom, the children take bedrooms 2 and 3, and bedroom 4 becomes the guest room, used least, with the bed head turned south or east.

  1. Fill the zone of every room from the plan, with North verified.
  2. Mark the room that reads good for a master bedroom in both schools. That is the master.
  3. Give the rooms rated good for a bedroom to the next occupants.
  4. Turn any room that reads avoid for a bedroom but good for a study into the study.
  5. Check every toilet; note any at 4 or 5 of 5.
  6. Where the schools disagree, note both and decide as a family.

What is tradition and what is fact

Tradition

  • Bedrooms in the Satyaka and Antariksha quarters: Manasara XXXVI.37 [3].
  • Study between south-west and west; sleeping rooms in the south (editor's restoration): Vishwakarma Prakash 2.94 to 97 [4].
  • Zone ratings, severities and bed guidance: Vastu16's rule table, a draft pending consultant review [1].

Physical fact

  • Minimum habitable room sizes of 9.5 and 7.5 square metres: NBC 2016 Part 3, cl. 12.2.2 [2].
  • Every bathroom or WC needs an opening to air, and no WC opens into a kitchen: NBC 2016 Part 3, cl. 12.4 [2].

Where Vastu16 fits

Our free tool lets you score all four bedrooms and every toilet under both schools. You upload the plan, tag each room, verify North, and it shows every room's zone, both readings and where the schools disagree. It does not decide who sleeps where; that stays with your family. For what else applies to flats, see our page on Vastu for a flat.

Questions people ask

How should rooms be arranged in a 4 BHK as per Vastu?

Give the master bedroom a room in the south-west, south or west, which both schools rate good. Give the other bedrooms rooms in the west, north-west, east or south. Put the study in the north-east, east or west, and keep toilets out of the north-east and the centre. Then check where the two schools disagree.

Which bedroom should the parents take?

Vastu16's rule table rates rooms by type, not by who sleeps in them. The master bedroom rules favour the south-west, south and west in both schools, so whoever the family treats as the head of the home usually takes that room. For older parents, a room near a toilet and with good light also matters.

Where should the servant room be?

Vastu16's table has no rule for a servant room, so the check does not score it. If you tag it as a bedroom, it is read with the bedroom rules. Its attached toilet, if it has one, is scored like any other toilet, so check that toilet's zone first.
