Vastu for a 1 BHK flat: what to check
In a 1 BHK flat, check four things in this order: the zone of every toilet, the kitchen, the one bedroom and the main door. A small flat has few rooms, so a single toilet in a zone both schools avoid moves the result more than it would in a larger home.
These rules are a draft rule set, pending review by our consultants. Treat them as a guide, not a verdict.
What to check in a 1 BHK flat
- The bathroom. Most 1 BHK flats have one toilet, often attached to the bedroom. Read its zone on its own, not as part of the bedroom. The schools avoid toilets in NE, N, NNE, Centre, SW, SE, E, W, S under the 16-zone school and NE, Centre, SW, N, E under the 8-direction school.
- The bedroom. Tag the only bedroom as the master bedroom. Good zones are SW, S, WSW, W under the 16-zone school and SW, S, W under the 8-direction school.
- The kitchen. In many 1 BHK layouts the kitchen opens off the living room near the door. Good zones are SE, SSE, S, W, NW under the 16-zone school and SE, NW under the 8-direction school.
- The centre. In a small flat the centre often falls in the living room or a passage. Both schools keep the centre open, so a toilet or kitchen there is read as a serious defect.
- A pooja space. A 1 BHK rarely has a separate pooja room. A prayer shelf or unit is read the same way as a room: good zones are NE, ENE, E, W under the 16-zone school and NE, E, N under the 8-direction school.
Good and avoid zones for each room
Zones are measured from the centre of the home with North verified. A zone that is not listed is neutral for that room.

Questions people ask
Can a 1 BHK flat follow Vastu?
Yes. The rules are the same as for a larger home. The difference is that each room carries more weight in the result, because there are fewer of them.
Where should the pooja place be in a 1 BHK flat?
A prayer shelf or unit can go in the living room. The suitable zones are NE, ENE, E, W under the 16-zone school and NE, E, N under the 8-direction school. Our remedy library suggests a movable prayer unit in the north-east part of the living room when there is no room for a separate space.
Does an attached bathroom spoil the bedroom's Vastu?
The schools read the toilet and the bedroom as two rooms, each in its own zone. An attached toilet in a good disposal zone does not count against the bedroom.
